Ubuntu won't install on 64 bit dell inspirion with intel i5 processor

Tried usung latest version of Ubuntu on my laptop. Not to install but boot off of cd. Would freeze during boot up with 32 bit and would boot up with 64 bit but screen would turn on and off and mouse would freeze up. Using Dell laptop with Intel core i5 processor.

Sorry for joining somebody else's topic with my own problem, but I've got a similar issue and no idea what to google for next...
I've got a brand new i5-2405s on a Gigabyte GA-H67M-UD2H-B3 with a clean WD HDD. BIOS set to defaults and boot menu changed depending on the device I used.

I've been trying to install or at least boot Lucid Lynx 32bit and 64bit and Natty Narwhal 32bit and 64bit (in that order one by one) from an USB stick. Used SanDisk 16Gb and Corsair 4Gb USB (I've read that NN had problems with SanDisk, so I switched to Corsair). Boot halts on the Ubuntu splash screen or informs of an "unrecoverable error".
Tried to boot from a CD connected through USB and it didn't work either (not sure if that's an Ubuntu problem, though, a Windows XP installation CD also failed).

I've connected HDD with an installed Lynx (which I'm using right now on a different machine) through the same USB and it worked fine, except for the screen resolution and Internet connection.

I'm a Linux newbie, who switched to Ubuntu just a few months ago. I can and do use google but have no idea what the problem might be or what to look for next so I'd be grateful for any suggestions...

In case anyone runs into the same problem: it seems that Ubuntu installer is having some issues with i5 built-in graphics (?) and crashes so the solution is to do an alternate CD or manual install or try a different distribution of Linux, like Fedora (as I did, I don't think I'm smart enough to do a manual install).

As a side note. Md5Sum checks of downloaded linux isos ensure file integrity of iso files before you boot them. Saves me grief.

More or less same problem here with my new PC with i5-processor; I asked the question in another forum where they pointed out that apparently there is a problem with Sandy Bridge and Linux.
In short what I experienced:

Ubuntu 11.04 installation usually fails.
In the last few months I tried several distributions:

Success:
Mint 11,
Kubuntu 11.04

Fail:
Ubuntu 11.04
OpenSuse 11.4 (installation progress bar halts at the very beginning of the installation)
Fedora 15 (installation halted at 'waiting for hardware to be initialized')

All these (live) distributions work fine on my old laptop.As I did these installations over a period over several months I can not remember exact details about what happened.

Ubuntu 11.04 64bit installation from a minimal CD worked for me.
Fedora 15 64bit live CD installation was a success, too.

Just of curiosity: do you have a motherboard with a built-in graphic card? (I don't)
