Wine - Can't check 'Allow exectuable file as program' box
Hi, I've installed Wine on my Ubuntu system. I've tried a couple of Windows programs, but no luck. After I right click on the setup.exe file, I then go to 'Preferences' and 'Permissions', but it won't let me check the box 'Allow executing file as program.' Does that mean the program is incompatible with Wine? Is there a list of compatible programs someplace? Thank you much.

I haven't used wine for years but my recollection of it is that on right clicking on some windows file I would select the option to open with wine. If wine isn't shown as an option, open with other and in the window type in wine.
It would probably help if you listed whatever programs you use and someone who is familiar with wine could give you some help. Have you looked at the winehq site for information on whatever programs you are trying to use?

You need to open .exe files with wine. You can't execute them directly.

Wine, error when opening .exe file
Thanks to both of you for the info. The main Windows programs I'd like to get working on Ubuntu is Garmin Mapsource Trip and Waypoint Manager, and some of the other Mapsource software.
Esgosnell: If you mean open the .exe file by double clicking on it, I've tried that, with several Windows programs and I always come up with the error: "The exe file is not marked as executable" Does that mean they're not compatible with
Wine?
I looked at the list of Windows files that are compatible with Wine. I was surprised at how small it was, and it seemed to be mostly games. Does that make sense? With that small list, it seems doubtful that any of the Windows programs I want to run will run with Wine.
Thanks again

The above from your first post. Have you actually installed anything with wine? What happens when you use the method I suggest earlier with any program you have installed in wine? More details on what exactly you have done and how you have installed whatever programs you want would be helpful. Have you read the documentation for wine? After I right click on the setup.exe file,

Right-click on the .exe file, then select "Open with Wine Windows Program Loader". That should install the Windows program into wine, and then you can open it directly through a .desktop file, or from the Applications/Wine menu item.

Thanks for the help from both of you.
So far, I haven't been able to install anything with Wine. Here's how I've been attemting to do it: After the progam CD is in the drive and has been recognized, I open the Wine File Browser (which appears to be the same as the Ubuntu File Browser), right-click on either the AutoRun.exe or setup.exe file (I've tried both), and click on “Open with Wine Windows Program Loader.” I always get this error message: “The file '/media/(which ever file I'm attempting to install) is not marked as executable. ...etc.”
Also, when I try to change the permissions to “Alow executing file as program,” it won't allow it, giving me an error message: The Permissions could not be changed”
So, what do you think?
I've read the documentation, but I'm not sure it's the latest version. Could you give me the URL for the latest documentation?
Should I send you a list of the Windows software I have? Maybe there's one there that would work with Wine. Thanks again.
