Speed. Are these factors in my systems performance?

Good afternoon everyone. First and foremost, thank you for the countless times I have come to this forum in search of an answer and found a solution.
I am ecstatic with the support and members who go out of their way to help. While using a computer for well over 20 years now, M$ windows was always the OS.
    I use Unbuntu 10.10.
I still have the windows OS as an option when I boot up the computer. I haven't used it in well over a year so I would like to remove it if necessary. Does its existence on my computer slow down my startup time?
In short, I am trying to maximize the performance of this system. I game rarely. I do watch movies, browse the internet, type papers, and follow the Forex.
Could I just do a complete format of the system after saving the drivers and install Linux again? Would this get rid of all the garbage windows junk on my system?
Looks like I can only add 2 GB RAM, anyway around this?

If you have a Wubi install then creating a partition and doing a conventional install will probably improve things, otherwise unless you are out of disk space the fact Windows is on the hard drive will make little difference imo

RAM is likely to be limited by motherboard/bios ... be careful about what type and size you can use. I ended up buying 2GB for a desktop system which will not use it (despite the manual for the motherboard saying it should)
