Update Manager Problem
Hi
I am fairly new to this ubuntu linux and am trying to learn everything about it and become more knowledgeable. I currently have an old laptop with ubuntu version number as below:
I have only started using this laptop so hence the reason I have such an old version, am I right in saying the latest version is 11.04?Code:cat /etc/issue Ubuntu 9.04 \n \l
Anyhow I am trying to update to this later version and I have no idea how I do this from the command line or update manager and I also have a red warning icon on the top task bar highlighting an error that occured and I have to run update manager.
When I run update manager I get this message:
There is an option in update manager that says:Your distribution is no longer supported
You will not get any further security fixes or critical updates. Upgrade to a later version of Ubuntu Linux. See ubuntu Homepage for more information on upgrading.
And when I try upgrading to that I get message saying:New distribution 10.04.2 is available
So I am unsure what I need to do first, am I right in saying I have to upgrade to version 10 then 11 or do I need to do something else first?Cannot upgrade
An upgrade from 'jaunty' to 'lucid' is not supported with this tool.
Thanks

Ubuntu 9.04 is no longer supported.
You can, in any case, only upgrade to the next version (in your case 9.10). I believe that 9.10 is also no longer supported.
I suggest that you download a supported version (10.04 onwards). Test the version you choose by using the live CD. If everything works install away and enjoy.

Hello
It's a pretty jump to upgrade from 9.04 to 11.04 and you will likely encounter lots of problems. The best route to take would be to backup any important data, do a fresh install using the latest version, then restore your data to the new system.
Good luck with it, either way.oz

I agree with Oz.
Normally, you don't want to skip a version number when upgrading. And since the next version for you (9.10) is already out of support, you'd be running into more headaches than you'll really want to deal with.
Back up any important data, start with a fresh install.Jay
