new installation 10.04 won't boot
Just installed 10.04 LTS to a Dell 7500. I've installed on the second of two hard drives. Linux won't boot. Here's output of fisk -l
I've gone into setup at startup and chosen first hard drive for boot order. Get a blinking cursor. Also tried second hard drive as first in order. Here it hangs after "MPT Boot ROM successfully installed".Code:Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0xf0000000 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00058a73 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 59532 478183424 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 59532 60802 10201089 5 Extended /dev/sdb5 59532 60802 10201088 82 Linux swap / Solaris
I suspect BIOS is not seeing grub. Are there things to check from the live CD? Only file I see in /boot/grub/ is grubenv. Even after mounting /dev/sdb1. Should there be a grub.conf?

This is just a guess but it sounds like GRUB did not get installed correctly. You might try Rescatux and see if that helps you.

I just did a clean install to second hard drive. Told installer to put bootloader to /sdb.
Looks like this machine has a hardware raid controller. On startup it searches for devices and shows two hard drives and LSILogic SAS1068E-IR. Then just hangs. Could hardware raid be a problem here? Outputs of fdisk -l and boot_info_script:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ more RESULTS.txtCode:Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x000b0ca0 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System Disk /dev/sdb: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x00087833 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 58336 468581376 83 Linux /dev/sdb2 58336 60802 19803137 5 Extended /dev/sdb5 58336 60802 19803136 82 Linux swap / Solaris

I think hardware raid controller might be a problem. I have no familiarity with it so can't give you any advice.
You do have sdb set to first boot priority? According to the bootinfo script, sda has no partitions and is not formatted but does have Grub2 in the mbr. It also shows Grub2 in the mbr of sdb looking for additional Grub2 files on sdb1 and shows they are present. I would suggest you go to the Ubuntu site below, Section 8.1 and modify your boot menu to change the set root line to (hd0,1) and try that. Read the page first, this is a one time thing and if it boots successfully, you can change it permanently. Instructions to do that are also on that page:

On startup I go to setup to select boot priority. This is not in GRUB. It never gets to GRUB whether I set first hard drive as priority or second. When I set second as priority it hangs after "MPT Boot ROM successfully installed" in startup scroll. When I select first hard drive as priority the screen eventually goes black.
The section 8.1 you point to is for editing GRUB after GRUB comes up. I've never seen GRUB show. I understand I should be able to get to GRUB config files, etc but have never been able to locate them. I tried to mount /dev/sdb but got message saying mount was busy.

I'm not familiar with whatever the above is but googling it got a lot of sites with problems. Might try a web search with that message."MPT Boot ROM successfully installed"

Looks like that message is related to hardware controller. I need to confirm that the LSILogic controller is not active. That is, the two driver are not in RAID configuration when starting system. I understand that is checked in BIOS or with a live CD. Anyone know how to confirm this? I want to have two independent disk drives. If I can get to that point then booting should not be a tremendous challenge.
