Cool How to install a data/fax modem in Ubuntu 10.4?

    Hi,
I recently purchased and installed a smartlink 56k modem on my computer. It works fine on the Windows Xp 32 bit-installed partition and is recognized by the operating system without the installation of any drivers. However, I am not sure how to install the same modem on the Ubuntu 10.4 partition.

If you can tell me which apps that I need to download as well as the procedure for installing them I will be very happy.

    Thank you in advance.

Is your modem an internal modem which sits in a PCI slot? If so, it is likely designed by the manufacturer for exclusive use by windows. There is a link below to the Ubuntu forums on how to set up the smartlink modem. Note that it is 5 years old and for an older version of Ubuntu. Scroll down to the smartlink section and read through it. If the process doesn't work, you may get some useful information from it. There is an organization called linmodems which has drivers for winmodem, might google that with smartlink.

    Hello and welcome aboard!

Yep, most of the internal modems have been somewhat problematic for Linux users. Some external modems used to work with Linux pretty well, but not all of them. Not sure about the current external models, though. Maybe some other modem users will chime in with some current info for you.
