Mounted Hard Drive Permissions
Hi,
Disclaimer: I don't have much experience with Linux.
I accidentally moved some system files on my Macbook that make the operating system no longer work. I've pretty much come to terms that I'm going to have to reinstall the operating system and start over, but I wanted to try to save the files from my hard drive first.
I thought I would try booting Linux and copying the files to an external hard drive. Unfortunately it doesn't allow me access to most of the files I want. It won't let me change the permissions since it is mounted as read-only. I tried remounting as read/write and nothing seemed to happen.
Any ideas?

Hello and welcome aboard!

If you haven't tried it already, you might try booting a Linux liveCD such as Parted Magic, then using it to move your files to where you want them.oz

It would help members to help you if you posted more information. For example:
You do know there are in excess of 500 different distributions of Linux. Which version of Linux are you using? Are you using a Live CD? What specifically did you do that failed? Perhaps if you posted the steps you have taken which failed, someone would be able to help.I thought I would try booting Linux and copying the files to an external hard drive.
