    Can't reinstall ubuntu

Ok so I'm on ubuntu 11.04 and have encountered I few problems that I can't seem to fix. I decided a fresh install was probably best so I made an installation disk and popped it in. everything loaded up fine and I went through the installation process, when I noticed the "update option". I decided to try it before trying the full re-install where I would loss all my files.
As soon as the reinstall started It said "saving installed packages". I left my pc for about an hour and when I came back it still said the same thing with the loading bar still stuck at the start. Any ideas how I can fix this?

Reboot the installation disc and skip the "update option"...

Could you tell us what "fixed" the problem, trivial or not? The thread isn't valuable without the information.
