Is this possible in Linux? I know in Winblows if you are watching a movie the screensaver will stay off. Does it matter which player I use?...

Myself, I just deactivate it while watching movies. I looked at the two players I use most, kaffeine and vlc, and neither has an option to hold the screensaver while playing a video. I just checked the Totem movie player, and it does hold the screensaver when displaying a video, so the short answer is "it depends".

I have been deactivating my screensaver I was just wondering if there was another way.

I de-activated my screen saver years ago. Screen savers are to protect the phosphor coating on CRT displays. An image constantly displayed on the same spot could burn a ghost image on the screen. LED displays don't have this problem and a screen saver is not needed.

I`m running Kubuntu 11.04 with screensaver and power management disabled and it still goes blank after 10 minutes unless I go into the konsole and run:-
xset -dpms s noblank
Then it will be OK for that session.

I have checked ubuntu 11.04, 10.10 and Mint 11, all have the same Screensaver preferences program. By un-ticking the boxes "Activate screen saver when computer is idle" and "Lock screen when screen saver is active" the screen saver stays off.
Does Kubuntu have a different screen saver program? The world is run by educated idiots - you can't argue with idiots, they have had years of practice.
