    Manual WLAN connection

Does anyone know how to manually connect - that is, without Gnome's NetworkManager or any other GUI tool, but by editing the interfaces file or using iwconfig/ifconfig directly - to the type of "open" networks you find in hotels, airports etc.?

I'm thinking about the type of open wlan which lets you connect, and then when you open a browser it takes you to a "portal" page where you have to enter login information etc.

In windows, this allways works easily. The wlan is found, I connect, and when I open IE I get the login page.

However, I'm struggling to find out how to do this in Linux, manually like mentioned above.

Anyone know? I tried using iwconfig wlan0 ESSID, and then dhclient eth0. But this doesn't work, and I'm unable to open the portal page (since it doesn't seem to get any information from the DHCP server).

Seriously? Linuxforums.org, and no one knows (or bothers to answer) something as basic as this?

If it's that basic, it should be easy to find on the 'Net.

Let me google that for you
