    Question Recommended Needs

A few years ago I was sent Ubuntu 6.? Even though I did run the live CD, I never got around to installing it. I have a few PCs around that I am not doing anything with, and instead of getting rid of them, I figured that I would install Ubuntu onto one of them.
I am coming from the PC world, and when I build PCs, there are certain programs that I install that don't come with windows, so I d/l and install them.
Now I am hoping that during the install it will recommend and install the newest version of Ubuntu, but I am wondering what other software you recommend that I install that you feel are necessary needs that won't come in Ubuntu?

Depends what you want to do... The included packages are sufficient for the average user's needs (music, photos, office and web).

    Hello and welcome!

It won't, and Ubuntu 6.06 was released over 6 years ago, so I would recommend downloading and installing a later release because a great deal has changed with Linux in that amount of time.

You can find some software options that might suit your needs here:

Edit: forgot to add that if you find an application there that you want to try, be sure to use your package manager to install it rather than installing from source, if possible.

Thanks guys... I downloaded the newest version earlier today then followed the instructions on burning an iso cd. I will attempt to install it this weekend. Been watching some YouTube vids on the program, along with reading the forums here to get a better idea and clue as to what I am doing.
