I hear nothing, I hear nothing!

I have a Gateway Profile all in one PC. I have no issue with listening to sounds on my Windows side. The moment I am using Ubuntu be it 9.04, 9.10, 10.04 or 10.10 I hear nothing. The only way I can hear anything is to use earphones. I have been helped here a couple of times so I am hoping I'll get some help again. I also can not get a microphone to work I push the volume control all the over and zilch no sound. If I have sound on one side why don't I have it on the other? Any help will be appreciated to the Max.

    Post the output of
    Code:
    sudo lspci -knn
You have tried all those versions and still get no sound? I know this is simple and whatnot but have you tried adjusting the volume?? If the headphones are working then the speakers should be working too.

I have tried adjusting the volume moving the slider all tjhe way to the right for maximum effect but still no sound. not a peep.
I hope you will be able to see if there is something not at full strength or anything which would explain why i have this no sound issue.

It should be working, try this command.
    Code:
    sudo aplay -l

This is what I came up with when I used the command; sudo aplay -l:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
    card 0: ICH5 [Intel ICH5], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel ICH5]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    card 0: ICH5 [Intel ICH5], device 4: Intel ICH - IEC958 [Intel ICH5 - IEC958]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Does this look promising. i am going to try to see if i hear anything without the earphones?

Open a console and type "alsamixer". Are the levels down on your speakers? You can use the arrow keys to turn them up again. Unfortunately this wont survive a reboot; you will have to do this every time you boot up.

If there is anyone with a permanent answer to this issue, it would be much appreciated.

That's quite true but alsamixer is a good place to start. When it's OK, use "gnome-volume-control" so that the sound settings will survive reboots.

There is also "pavucontrol" for pulseaudio and if using KDE there is "kmix".
Have a look at a number of those so you get an idea of what each offers.

Recently on a new openSUSE install I couldn't unmute event sounds in kmix so that I couldn't hear skype incoming calls. I had to use pavucontrol to unmute it, then I was able to unmute event sounds in kmix.

    Hello

If none of the above suggestions work, you can also take a look at the nice sound troubleshooting howto articles published by the ubuntu community:

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

    Hope they help you.

I opened the console typed in 'alsamixer' and did make adjustments. I am going to attempt to put in a couple images of what the alsamixer showed. Well that was a bust. The two images I had hoped to present here i could not access them.
