Ubuntu 11.04 Slow start-up and reduced overall speed
Hi All,
I've had Ubuntu running on my Sony Vaio VGN-TX56GN laptop for almost a year and upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 in April. The system used to run smoothly but this morning the battery went dead and when I switched it back on it took about 5 minutes for it to get to login screen and was extremely slow there after (takes over 5 seconds between me moving the mouse and the pointer moving on the screen). I left it be for a while thinking it'd get better but no luck.
Rebooted many times with different options (Recovery, Previous Versions,...). I even tried different Session Managers but it doesn't make a difference. I ran a memory test and it was a PASS.
Since Linux doesn't have a System Restore Point by default I am stuck.
I tried to look for solutions online but so far I haven't come across anything relevant to my situation.
Any help would be appreciated.
All the best,
Arya

Maybe your disk is failing? Try using a live CD (any Linux distro) to boot from, then use fsck to check the disk.
You might also want to check that the CPU fan is working correctly and that the heat-sink fins are not clogged with dust. If the CPU get's hot, it may throttle it down in order to protect itself.

Hi,
I've exactly the same problem after my battery went dead.
I've a hp 6710b so it's no "viao-problem".
Have you found a solution?
Thanks in advance!
