Install Ubuntu 10.04.02 LTS on Dell Inspiron 2600 Laptop
1. Download the "I2600A08" file from Dell from a Windowz machine and run the .exe file to load onto a blank/formatted floppy disk(!).
2. Change the bios of the Dell Inspiron 2600 by inserting this floppy and then turning on the machine – you’ll notice it’s running Windows 98… say “OK” to change the bios to A08. The laptop will automatically restart when finished – remove floppy immediately and hold the F2 button to get back into the bios.
3. Have a Ubuntu 10.04.02 LTS (Lucid Lynx) Alternate CD ready to go.
4. Move the CR-ROM to the top of the list in the Boot tab of the bios with the F6 key
5. Insert the Ubuntu 10.04.02 Alternate CD into the CD Drive of the Laptop. Hit the F10 key to save changes to the bios and start off the CD
White diagonal bars take over the screen and make things hard to read, but it will install
6. When prompted to; remove the CD and restart, but hold down the “Shift” key until you get into the boot menu.
7. Select "Ubuntu, with Linux 2.X.XX-XX-generic (recovery mode)"[Enter]
8. Down arrow until you select "Drop to root shell prompt"[Enter]
Your prompt will likely be half cut-off at the top - don't worry
9. Load and save xorg.conf file (wget attachment from this post - not sure what the full address will be), su, or sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Cntl+R[Enter], dell-inspiron-2600-xorg-conf.txt[Enter], The file can be saved with just Cntl+X as nano will ask you if you want to save before you exit, but likely the prompts/commands will be extremely hard to read, so... Cntl+O[Enter] to save, Y[Enter] to confirm saved name, Cntl+X[Enter] to exit, N not to save again.
At the prompt, type: reboot now
Success!
