I am running Ubuntu 9.04 as a partition with windows 7 on a acer aspire 5742, I would like to connect to the internet in Ubuntu, wirelessly, but I am unable to turn my wireless on in Ubuntu, and network manager says "no network connections available".

I have the following network adapters:

make sure you have firmware for your wifi installed
    and
check to make sure your wifi chipset is ON
depending on computer/laptop you use there either is a switch or hot key combination to switch ON or OFF your wifi chipset
install all pertinent packages to wireless for your KDE desktop in GNOME version as the KDE version sometimes causes problems

if you need more help you need to give more details about your desktop environment installed (KDE4 or GNOME)

O.K. I run the whole script and got:

    lo no wireless extenstions.

    pan0 no wireless extensions.

p.s. I have wireless working fine in windows, I see the logo light up on the keyboard also, it just wont swith on in ubuntu and also no light in ubuntu.

I also ran "sudo modprobe ath5k" and got back:

WARNING: All config files need.conf: /etc /modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.

What about the rest of the output from the script?
Please post it all, in its entirety.

I'll refrain from giving any advice that might mess with the steps being given to you in your thread on the Ubuntu Forums.
Seems like the member helping you there might be on the right track.

    *EDIT*

I see in post #9 in that thread that you are wanting to get online with wireless in Ubuntu so that you can update to the newest version.
I will let you know that you will run into various issues and headaches doing so. It's best to not skip versions when upgrading.

I see his last posting was along the same line of thought that I was having.
While you could, after a time-consuming process, install all of the needed drivers... here is my thought.

9.04 is now outdated. Updating will cause you headaches. A simple solution would be to download 10.04, which is a long term release that will continue getting updates for quite a while.
I'm posting from it now. And it already includes the drivers that you would need for your wireless card.

    *EDIT*
I just checked... 10.04 will be getting updates through 2013.

JayD has the best idea for you, go with that. 10.04 has always worked for me better than 11.04, and as he says, it is long term support.
