    Constant Freezing

    Hello everybody,

first post on these forums, and of course its a problem...

basically i installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop last night, i really like it except for one problem... it is constantly freezing, i have found the problem occurs a lot, such as when i am running both mail and firefox it will freeze, i will still have accesses to the mouse but clicking or pushing buttons has no effect

i have looked around on several forums to see if there was a solution... i found a lot of people having the same freezing issue but no one had resolved the problem, or at least none of the solutions worked for me

if anyone could help that would be great! thanks in advance

    Hello and Welcome.
When you downloaded Ubuntu, did you check the md5sums or did you at least test the disk before installing?

i did not check the md5sums unless it was checked by default, and im not sure what you mean by test the disc..

No, md5sums are not checked by default, you have to do it manually. Some distros have a "Check the disk for errors" function that can be used to test the integrity of the CD/DVD...sometimes a bad download or a bad burn to disk can have really strange consequences. You can still check the md5sums of the iso you downloaded, hopefully that is not corrupted.
See this link on checking the md5sums.

I think, but I'm not sure....the Ubuntu CD/DVD has a "check disk for errors" but you only see it if you boot from the CD/DVD.

I don't know if this is related, but I installed FF 5.0 on my SL 6 (clone of RHEL 6) last night, and it promptly froze my system, except for the mouse cursor. I had to hard reset the system, and wait while the file systems were checked/fixed. Not happy. I reverted to the distribution supported 3.6.18 version and the problem went away...

Anyway, try installing/using the Google Chrome browser and see if that helps.

I had problems with the initial release of 11.04, so went back to 10.04. That might solve your problem.

How much RAM does your system have?

Do you have 'swap' enabled? You can check by looking in 'top' from the command line.

If it's enabled, it will probably look something like this:

    Swap: 3145724k total, 378456k used, 2767268k free, 730636k cached

if it's not, it might look like this:

    Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 519976k cached

I've noticed the symptoms you describe on systems running low on memory. Enabling swap solved the problems (although it should normally be enabled by default, but perhaps something went wrong).
