    DNS and login problem

Done a fresh install of version 11 ubuntu on an HP laptop as follows:

ran dariks boot and nuke em to clean old O/S off HD
Installed version 11 and followed instructions to install

    Here is the problems:

On start up when I try to login I cannot type anything into password field,
when I hold power button in to shutdown then restart it will allow me
    to type in the password

Once in I have a wired network connected, it will ping any IP address
but will not resolve DNS. Connection appears to be ok from desktop
    - says connection successful

I would be very appreciative if someone could point me in the
direction of resolving how and why the DNS is not working,
    total newbie at linux stuff.

    Thanks

It sounds like some kind of faulty install. Did you check the md5sums of your download and also the cd/DVD that you installed from?
What kind of keyboard do you have? USB? Serial? Try changing the keyboard to see if that helps. If you are using USB then try serial.
Post a copy of your /etc/resolv.conf file please.

I seem to be having problems understanding how to read the md5sum text file in the iso image I have on disk. If I put it in windows I can see the file ok but in ubuntu I do not know what commands to run to see the details of this file.

If I put the cd in the laptop with ubuntu I can go to the media folder and the installation is showing as Ubuntu 11.04 i386 but if I try and run:

    media$ md5sum file.iso
    I get:
md5sum: file.iso: no such file or directory
I am trying to determine if the current checksum I have is valid or not.

What am I doing wrong, how do I run this command against the iso file?

    Thanks

Ubuntu has a disk check feature when you boot from the CD/DVD.
For the download on your hard drive, you must replace file.iso with the actual filename of the download you wish to check.

I ran the following disk check and it said there are no errors found. What do I need to do next? Should I still check the checksum as before?

    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...IntegrityCheck

If I do that the command would be:

    media$ md5sum md5sum.txt

md5sum.txt is the name of the md5 file on my CD installer

    does that look correct?

Thanks for the help so far

Well that doesn't work either. I am confused as to the file extension and name I have to give to the md5sum command function to return the checksum from the md5sum text file within the iso image.

I'm pretty sure that if the installer says the CD/DVD is good, then the check sums are also good. I guess we move onto something else.
Post a copy of your /etc/resolv.conf file please and also, if it exists, post a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.
    Code:
    sudo cat /etc/resolv.conf
    Code:
    sudo cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
