Download speed 10 times slower than usual (running wireless)

    Hi everyone.

I just installed the newest version of Ubuntu 11.04 Natty on my antique Dell Inspiron E1405 and have been having problem after problem ever since. The first one was no wireless internet of course.

I was finally able to fix that but now I noticed that all my downloads are way slower than usual. By usual I mean back when I had Windows installed, so everything went down from 1 MB/s to 100kB/s.

I've been searching forums for the last 3 hours and been trying all sorts of stuff, like disabling my ipv6, turning my wlan0 power management off and even using openDNS. None of these worked.

So if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

Does this only happen on your home router/access-point, or any WiFi location?

Well I haven't tested it anywhere else, but I assume it's the same everywhere since I haven't changed any settings on my router since changing to ubuntu.

You say antique computer, what are the specs? You might need a distro that is light on resources, such as Lubuntu or AntiX.

Ok, apparently it's not the ubuntu, I just reinstalled Windows XP and the internet is still really slow. I configured everything the way it was before though, so clueless about what the problem might be.
