"Ubuntu is not compatible with the internet in Denmark"
Hi guys,
I'm new here, so I hope I'm not breaking any rules, written or unwritten.
A few weeks ago my neighbor asked for help with her laptop (In the United States). She was running Vista with McAfee antivirus, and it had issues. She told me it had viruses, to me it looked like she shut off the computer while it was installing updates. Anyway, I installed updates and ran an antivirus, but somehow it wasn't connecting to the internet and it had other issues as well. I told her about ubuntu, I put it on an extra laptop hard drive and let her test it, and she said it was fine so I installed it on her hard drive.
She was having problems with the internet not connecting. I went to her house and found that it was connecting to the network but not the internet. The problem was the wireless router was on top of a desktop computer and the cable modem, and it overheated. The internet worked after rebooting the wireless router. Today she left a message on her home phone saying she was visiting her parents in denmark, and the internet wouldn't work. She said someone told her that Ubuntu is not compatible with whatever internet they have in denmark. This makes absolutely no sense to me, so I'm thinking she has the hardware switch for the wireless card is off. Other than that, what can it be? I looked into it and I don't think there is anything different about the internet over there, unless they have dialup, but I think she said it wasn't working in the airport either.
Any help is appreciated.

Hello and Welcome!

It's not likely to be a 'compatibility' issue.
Have her check on the wireless switch, but also that Wireless is enabled in Network Manager.Jay

"The internet" is "the internet". It's no different in Denmark than in Sweden or in the US or anywhere else. It's the same everywhere, and any OS can use it, be it Windows, Mac, Linux, or anything else.

to restart networking use:
It might be soft blocked, meaning its off but not from a hardware switch. TryCode:sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Code:sudo rfkill unblock all

I agree, unless they are using some sort of proprietary software such as AOL, then it should just work once you get the settings correct.

Ok, I got a call back from her today and she is trying to use a broadband wireless modem. The provider is OiSTER, and the modem is a Huawei model number E173 (or something like that). Se said when the card is plugged in nothing shows up on the screen, but she can navigate to it as a usb drive and see the installer for windows. Does anyone know what driver/steps are needed to get this to work? I see the Huawei devices show up on this list of supported hardware and most of them work, I don't know why this one doesn't.

See this link, she'll need to provide a few more hints.
