laptop model or video card model? ATI, Nvidia, Intel?? Also why are you using 10.04 instead of 11.04, a lot has changed and this issue may be resolved with updated software. 11.04 is stable, it moves past gnome but most people haven't had a serious issue with that. At least upgrade to 10.10 since that's still using Gnome 2 and see if that solves the issue without messing around with xorg a bunch

glad to hear it. I try to keep my machine up to the newest version in general just because issues are taken care of throughout version that "will be fixed eventually" in the LTS version. I don't agree with the philosophy as I think LTS should be the first thing to get fixed as its name implies a more comprehensive supported OS but it is what it is. I'm sure your problem would have been fixable in 10.04 but it would have taken a lot of googling to update packages or manually altering xorg which is usually no fun. Hope you enjoy Linux, it can be a hard transition OS but Ubuntu is a good place to start
