There is not enough room on the disk to save to /tmp

    Dear Linux folks

I was talked into installing Ubuntu by a good friend of mine. It's been installed and the system runs quite smooth. However, it is not possible to download anything to the system because of the error message mentioned in the title of the post. There is about 20 gb free on the two partitions I have. I let the installer create the partition for Linux and already had two partitions of about 30 gb each when this was done. I am a bit amazed that the operating system can come with such a bug!

I've browsed several other forums, but honestly since I just installed Linux I don't know how to use the information to fix the bug.
A relevant forum post could be this one: ubuntuforums. org/showthread.php?t=890180][ubuntu]

It should be said that I am running a two operating systems, Windows XP being the lousy one but at least it is possible to download files to the computer!

I would appreciate your help and some guidance in how to fix this problem. I am a bit worried about a reinstall but I am aware that it might be the easiest way to fix the problem.

    Sincerely
    Frederik Buchholzer

What type of programs are you trying to download and where are you downloading them from? An example or two. The standard method of installing programs in Ubuntu is from their repositories which can be done with the apt-get command in a terminal or by using its GUI front-end, Synaptic.

You haven't posted enough information. You need to post the actual partition information with this command in a terminal:

sudo fdisk -l(lower Case Letter L in the command)

Also run the command df -h and post the output.

I was trying to download Adobe Flash to begin with, but the problem goes for any download.

    - Where do I do this?

Sorry but I am new to the system

There should be an Applications tab in the upper left of the Desktop. Click on it and mouse down the options and find one which says terminal and open it and run the commands there.

There should be a System tab also. Look for Synaptic and use it to install software. You didn't indicate which version of Ubuntu you have. Is it 11.04 the most recent? I haven't installed this version of Ubuntu so the information I'm giving you is based on the 10.10 version. There may be changes so if you don't see the Application/System tabs post back.

    Hey guys
Sorry about not replying - I have been busy on travels.
I reinstalled Ubuntu (8.10 intrepid) and manually selected partitions. Now I can download things, which is a huge improvement. I am getting some error messages in "Add/remove":
The list of available applications is out of date

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Example: Failed to fetch jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/intrepid/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found

And, more importantly, when I try to install a program in Add/Remove Applications, I get the following message (besides the above with the download problems):

"Neverball cannot be installed on your computer type (i386)

Either the application requires special hardware features or the vendor decided to not support your computer type."

    Any suggestions?

The messages you are getting mean that the version (8.10) of Ubuntu you installed is not longer supported and there are no active repositories. See the link below:

    https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...er/000116.html

The most recent version of Ubuntu is 11.04. If you don't want that due to the major changes made from earlier versions, you can download and installed 10.04 which will still be supported.

Also, the Neverball game should be in the Ubuntu repositories and after installing a new versin of Ubuntu you can just open a termianl and run this:

    sudo apt-get install neverball.

There may be a newer version at the neverball site and if you want that it will be a different process.

    Ubuntu 8.10-10.04/11.04

    Dear Yancek

Thank you so much for your reply. That explains everything.

Is it possible to upgrade to one of the above versions without formatting and reinstalling ubuntu?

    Sincerely
    Frederik

Its not recommended to upgrade from 8.10 to 10.04 or 11.04. This might break your system. I would suggest you to back up data and go for fresh install.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I tried and in the update window it says:

"Could not find the release notes.
    The server may be overloaded"

Having made two fresh installs of Ubuntu already and being without a CD burner, I am tired.

    Any suggestions?
