need help with partitions, to remove windows
i installed ubuntu 11.04 not too long ago with wubi alongside windows
now i want to remove windows, consider there are no important files or any files i care about on my windows installation
i wanna know if i can just delete the /host/ partition (which is where my windows is mounted) so that my / partition can access my full hard drive (currently limited to 18GB)
the current partition ubuntu uses is mounted on / and is listed as a /dev/loop0 device and named root.disk (not too sure what that means)
my windows installation is listed on /dev/sda device (which would be my hard drive)
now i want to delete windows, but theres one thing im not sure, in my windows installation, in /host/ubuntu/ theres one file named root.disk (im guessing it would be the 'virtual hard drive' created by ubuntu or wubi on installation)
now i would like to delete windows completely (dont need any of files to be saved / whatsoever), but i'd like to be able to keep everything i have on my linux (e.g. not having to reformat the root.disk partition and just allow it to have the full space on the hard drive aka 250 GB)
id also like to remove windows from the boot menu, but im guessing once its removed itll not show up anymore and ubuntu will be default boot option
also on a side note a quick question, when u see a manual entry in the terminal without adding -k to the command, is there anyway to go back to the command prompt without restarting the terminal
thanks

Hello and Welcome.
If this is indeed a WUBI install then you need to boot it up and login to Linux, copy/move/backup what you want to keep before you do anything. In order to remove Windows you're going to have to wipe the entire disk. Once you nuke Windows, the WUBI installed Ubuntu will go with it. So save everything you need, reboot the machine with any Linux CD/DVD installer and let it have the whole drive.
Try using an ampersand after your command like this.
commandname &
This will force the command into the background where it will run forever or until it completes.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

If Windows OS is host OS then you cannot remove Windows OS without affecting Ubuntu. Ubuntu will be also be removed with it. Backup Data, remove Windows OS and re-install Ubuntu.
Edit : Mike is really fast !
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

aight, thanks
so theres no way to keep wat i have on linux without putting it on usb storage device or on cd?
i dont have a cd of linux yet i installed it straight from the iso file with wubi
theres no way to just delete all windows files and removing it from the bios, while keeping the ubuntu installed and just expanding its storage?
edit: thanks alotLast edited by saume; 09-14-2011 at 03:33 AM.

nope, nope and nope!
That's one of the disadvantages of a WUBi install,,if you try it and like it enough to delete Windows then you must install it as outlined above.
Think of a WUBi install as a program that you installed in Windows, you can uninstall it from Windows but if you just delete Windows, you lose all the installed programs too.I do not respond to private messages asking for Linux help, Please keep it on the forums only.

ok, now i installed it form my usb, but i can run unity, it keeps telling me i dont have the required hardware to run it, and im pretty sure its because of my video card, i keep installing the driver (in "additional drivers"), and restart to make it take effect but it always says the driver is installed but not in use
i know for sure its not because of my processor or something else, im currently running with ubuntu classic (which would be gnome). not that i dont like it, i just want to get my video driver working... my video card is a NVIDIA GEFORCE, and ive installed the nvidia drivers for it
on another note, im trying to install ubuntu in parallel with windows 7 on my hp laptop, from the same usb (because for some reason it just wont take the 64bit linux, and yes it is a 64bit compatible processor), however, it doesnt show up the option install alongside windows as it did when i installed it on my pc, it only shows install over current OS or "something else", so i click something else, but im unable to add a partition for ubuntu on my hard drive, everything i tried would delete the current partition and make a new one
i tried making a new partition in windows 7 disk manager, on my C: drive, but i dont think it will work for installing ubuntu, but i didnt have time to test it yet, any help on anything would be appreciated, thanks
- 09-15-2011 #7Could you post the partition structure of your Laptop's Hard disk? You can boot up from USB and execute fdisk -l command or take screenshot of Windows 7 Disk Manager.on another note, im trying to install ubuntu in parallel with windows 7 on my hp laptop, from the same usb (because for some reason it just wont take the 64bit linux, and yes it is a 64bit compatible processor), however, it doesnt show up the option install alongside windows as it did when i installed it on my pc, it only shows install over current OS or "something else", so i click something else, but im unable to add a partition for ubuntu on my hard drive, everything i tried would delete the current partition and make a new oneIt is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

If Ubuntu is anything like Fedora and their version of the Nouveau driver, you have to kill the Nouveau driver before the NVidia driver will work. Hopefully someone else can chime in on this.

i cant post links to the s/s of my partition (need 5 posts to do so ), but basically 4 of em
1 named system very small 100mb ish
1 named "D" 17gb (back up windows for boot)
1 named "C" (main) 230 something GB
and 1 named HP tools about 100mb too
ubuntu detects the same 4 partitions (with different names sda1-4)
if i resize my C while installing ubuntu, will it
- allow ubuntu to take the allowed space to install?
- keep all my files i currently have on C?
and for the driver, im not too sure how id go with killing the driver, but ive removed it and reinstalled it 2 or 3 times (trying both versions of the driver) and it never worked

Can you run the fdisk -l command again, and just copy/paste the output here? Preferably in [code] tags for easier reading.
As for the drivers, check this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/NvidiaJay
