laptop and screen brightness : ACPI module ?

    Hello,

I bought an Acer (model 4750-2314) and installed Kubuntu 11.04.
    Everything works fine.
Except one thing : the screen brightness control.
The Fn keys work as it display the cursor with brightness scale.
However the screen brightness doesn't change at all.

I googled and it seems that I should installed an acer ACPI module.
    Is this correct ?
What should I look for to check it and fix it ?

    Thanks.
    Bye,
    Bruno

I have an acer as well and had the same problem with ubuntu 9.10. I had to use the acpi=off command on the grub line to get it to work right. There is the noapic command also. This may help u or it may not, try it and reply back with results. P.S. after I did the updates it worked fine without the grub commands, so if u haven't updated u might want to try that first.

SOLVED : laptop and screen brightness : ACPI module ?

    Solved. Many thanks.
Indeed using kernel parameter "ACPI=off" resolved it.
Now the Fn key for screen brightness works fine.

(note : Ubuntu is 11.04 "Natty Narwhal")

    Bye,

Cool i'm glad that worked out for ya. don't know why this is such an issue these days. It's the kernel that's the issue not really Ubuntu or any other distro for that matter. If you roll back your kernel it would more than likely fix the issue as well. I can't remember which kernel worked for me however, so that would take some experimentation on your part. But the issue is fixed and as long as everything else is working I wouldn't mess with it.
