Waiting for sound system to respond in Gnome

Ok, so I am running Backtrack 5 and have ALSA installed. It works quite well. I can bring up the command line ALSAMixer but the local controls built into the Gnome environment don't seem to work.

When I try to bring up the sound preferences in the indicator applet a message pops up that says: "Waiting for wound system to respond."

Oh yeah if this makes any difference, when I boot up by default it goes into a command prompt with no X running. So I start X manually when I want to use it.

    Any thoughts?

Try this, from the BackTrack Forums:

...it can fixed by navigating to System>Preferences>Startup Applications...
    now click add
    next name the startup application
    Then under command type /usr/bin/pulseaudio
now logout and restart the xserver and you should be good to go
