New to Linux, Fresh Install & Want to Learn More

    Good Day all,

My name is John and currently working in the wireless field, because everything basically runs on Linux I want to further my knowledge, I use to be able to get around DOS but don't know Terminal or Linux but want to learn more.

I'm using a MacBook Pro and have downloaded Virtual Box. I have one successful install but after doing some reading they recommend finding a Forum to post to and also try installing Linux from the command prompt.

I haven't been able to find how to actually get to the prompt to try this, is there a different verison of Ubuntu I need or a setting in Virtual Box I needed to change? I have the Ubuntu.iso from their site.

I thought I saw a place that asked me if I want to use the Command line or a UI but can't remember where now, it was late when I downloaded it and set it to install.

I bought a Linux for Dummies book and "A Practical guide to Linux" book, if you have any other recommendations for someone looking to learn more I'm more than happy to try them.

    Thanks!

At ubuntu.com, if you follow Get Ubuntu to Download | Ubuntu, there you have a link to "alternative downloads". One of those will allow text install (I think that's what you are asking for), the default download will only allow graphic install for Desktop versions, afaik (you also have the Server download).

That said, I don't think a text install will give you any advantage if you are starting, but what I know, right?

https://help.ubuntu.com/ is a good place to get help. Also like the simple examples at Linux Classes
And of course Information Technology Magazines, White Papers, Reports, and eBooks, and many more

Hope that's on the line of what you were looking for, and welcome to linux
    Luis

    Hi and Welcome !

If you have installed Linux already then I would suggest you to check linuxcommand.org. You will learn basic commands over there and learn more easily after that.

I won't suggest you try your hands on command line based distro yet. Work on Ubuntu or other distros having GUI for a few days.

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Honestly, one of the best ways to learn Linux is to use it.
Read posts on Forums like this one. Try to answer a question or two while you're at it.
At the end of all that, piece by piece, you'll find yourself with more and more knowledge.
