Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
In Ubuntu Classic, uncheck Gnome Login Sound in System - Preferences - Startup Applications. Disable Play Login Sound in System - Administration - Login Screen.

In latest version of Ubuntu, search Statup Applications. Disable Gnome Login Sound there. Search Login Screen too and disable Play Login Sound there.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
