    SOLVED - can't install Ubuntu 11.04 32Bit

I'm having a similar problem with installing Linux Ubuntu 11.04 32Bit Desktop version on an old desktop:
THe live cd starts normally (i've verified it does its job on another pc as i started doubting the cd itself but the cd's fine).
but goes Haywire with the screen flashing off and on, and next giving a
"codec_read: codec 0 is not valid [0xfe0000]" in 4 lines. then sort of loads the starting screen 2 - 3 times
and next doesnt give me the instal screens i got on the reference pc but only asks me for a Login and a Password.
(wich doesnt accept anything, though the cd did run the install or try-out version on the reference pc without problems)

The pc i'm trying to install it on hosts a AMD processor on a ASUS mobo, without a graphicscard.
The HDD is reformatted from NTFS to FAT32 with a xp-cd (i had the MGLDR error first but managed to fix this with commandcodes)
The bios is set to boot from cd first (for the HDD it'll give another windows related error, though the formatted HDD)

More information can be supplied if necessary ( i hope i mentioned the most important facts)

Since not knowing your Specs. We will start out small.

Download a iso of (hmmm, was going to recommend Slitaz but site is down right now for me. So) ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/...tel_modems.iso

    MD5sum for iso is

    Code:
    be0a741dc9d29795250441546b473e84 pup-431-k2.6.21.7-scsi-intel_modems.iso
How to md5sum (even in Windows)

Md5sum check downloaded iso first to save soe grief later first and then, burn iso image to cd and boot and run from live cd first.
I recommend the above because of sparse info on specs. Make sure you are connected to a land line when booting CD. I don't expect you to get wireless going since I don't even know your specs.

After booting cd and getting on line.

Open a terminal/console and copy and paste output of

    Code:
    lspci -n
    and

    Code:
    free
in your next post. I will check your readout at

Debian HCL; Debian GNU/Linux device driver check & report

and post results in my next post to show what YOUR hardware specs are so members can see what you are talking about and whether Ubuntu will be a viable option for you. Old, New, is sometimes a personal perspective when it comes to us Linux Users. One mans old is another mans new (so to speak).

If needing free ware for burning a iso image to cd in Windows. I have found
The Official ImgBurn Website to be easy to use.

    How to burn

If you have some other iage burner program like Nero and are comfortable using that. Then use that. There. I think I covered all the bases.
    Happy Trails, Rok
    Edit:
Shoot, I wrote out this whole post and it sounds like Ubuntu 11.04 boots for you. Disregard my Puppy link and just post lspci and free commands in next post.

    2nd Edit:

Hmmm. Just saw double thread at http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ubu...-04-32bit.html. Did you MD5sum check your Iso first Like I mention in my post?

    Internet

I've tried installing the ubuntu without an internetconnection (though the final destination of the pc is destined to be a websitesurfing machine) as the modem to connect it with contains a MAC-Firewall.

So i'll try to get the MAC with the old windows XP cd and the ipconfig/all code in recovery (hope it works). to get it on the internet. (could this have been the problem with ubuntu)

    p.s.
I'll be getting my hands on the .iso and the installations procedures as were given. For i can definatly understand the need for more specs other than the indeed latent ' old' and ' new'

I'd like to thank you for your early reply and will post my process once i can get my hands on it tonight (about 12hrs from this post)

Ubuntu takes a 1 Ghz cpu and 1 GB of ram to run decently, Lubuntu will run on much less, so depending on your specs you should probably start with one of them. Distrowatch.com has over 600 distro's available, and a top 100 (start with the top 20 or so on the list). You can do a search for older computers and they will recommend a number of distro's that run well on older computers. Other good distro's for older computers are LegacyOS and AntiX. Explore and have fun.

Reply to the System information (puppy linux booted)

    Maybe an interesting note:
the booting of puppylinux did not recognize my LCD-screen
    (HP 1702)

also got the pc online but couldnt copy/paste from the Console environment to textfile/this post
(and added some direct reads from the hardwareinfo)

I hope you can help me to get along. The end-purpose of this pc will be a browsing machine to acces a server with an online program (modern firefox preferred).

    With kind regards,

After booting the Puppy-linux (temporarily) puppy linux notifies that the hard drive is still NTFS (boot)
    With a disklabeltype msdos
    (size: 38.29 GiB)

Update; using the puppy linux partition manager the HDD is now Fat 32 (hd0,0)
I cant get grub installed (files dont exist) as it seems i need grub for any linux booting system

Above is your Hardware readout from Kmuto. Everything with a yes means that part is working.

Vesa option instead or Xorg option would have been the best choice when booting Legacy Puppy. You would have gotten a screen then probably.

233MB of ram is way too little for Ubuntu. You will need at least 512MB of ram to run some lightweight version of Ubuntu like Mason suggested in earlier above post.

    Puppy PDF Manual Link

Hewlitt Packard Computers can be a pain in the behind because of proprietary hardware they use when building their laptops. Especially the old ones. You are right. It is a older model but if ram was bumped up to lets say 512MB or 1gig. You would have more options on what could be installed and run well in Linux.

    Code:
Update; using the puppy linux partition manager the HDD is now Fat 32 (hd0,0)
I cant get grub installed (files dont exist) as it seems i need grub for any linux booting system
If me. I would have formatted Hard Drive as EXT 3 file system for / partition. Then I would have made a /swap partition of 700MB or so. Fat32 just turns that internal Hardrive into just one big pendrive.

install puppy linux on hard drive. Take your pick from the videos.

I was finally able to get to a Slitaz link. This is for the Forums. Slitaz Linux sounds like your best bet for that Hewlitt Packard you have as it now sits with 233MB of ram. Just look through the forum for a ISO link I guess.

    SliTaz Forum

Edit. Here is access to Slitaz Mirrors. The Isos are only 30MB or so, so a small Download. Use their forum to show you how to install. I usually went for the cooking iso but the 3.0 should be OK also as it is the Stable edition.

    To little RAM

I might have some RAM lying round, as i dont expect to build pc's with the stuff and this one's for a friend i'll try to poke in some more RAM until going for puppy linux on the HDD
(does puppy linux run firefox 6.0 and up?)

p.s. the pc is a desktop pc so no laptop hardware is present.
but i have an old Dell laptop wich's my next victim. *grins* (currently running windows xp)

I'd like to thank everyone already for the help they've given me i hope we can make the topic "solved" soon

    With kind regards,

I run Firefox 7 in MacPup 528. It comes with it out of the box. You need to install Java and Flash seperate though. I and runtt21 have made how tos for doing just that.

I found an extra RAM module, even ubuntu 11.04 is running now (in classic mode and slow) and working.
Seems all problems were indeed caused by a to low amount of ram (its now around 600mb)

I'll be trying Macpup 528 next to see if its lighter and thus faster running for the system.

I'd like to thank all of you for your help and advise

P.S. As i did not open this thread myself as it was redirected from another i cant mark this Thread as Solved.
'Ozar' if you are reading this, could u mark this thread as solved?

Next project: an 'old' DELL laptop hope it'll go smooth
