Question Please Help.. BASIC UBUNTU question

Hi to all those who are gonna read or have read till this...

I have a very very basic question. I want to install Ubuntu 11.04 OS on my laptop. My laptop spec [in simple words] = intel i7 2360M processor, 8 GB ram, Nvidia 540M GT 2GB, 750 GB HDD , and so on and on..

well the thing is, I went to the site to download the Linux and I found that there are two types of editions :- Desktop and Server edition... fine, and in each of these there is 2 more types :- 32 bit and 64 bit.

I did some searching and found that
1)Desktop installs ur GUI and when u wanna install some server features like apache and like those, and configs for them, u need to do it by urself..

    and

2)Server edition installs the Server features, but u need to install the GUI features by ur own. Obviously the server edition need not be so graphical, a bit is okie-doki.

Now I decided on with DESKTOP EDITION [ even though I have work with netbeans, apache, glassfish and all but I can config them, no problem]

the problem starts here;- I clicked the download and the file name has a words like "amd64" . FIRST , I NEED A 64bit VERSION so I NEED TO DOWNLOAD 64bit only and no 32bit, cause 32 bit cannot use full 8GB potential.

and the 32bit has words like " i386"

SOMEWHERE in the article its written "
PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD
For almost all PCs. This includes most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors. Choose this if you are at all unsure.
64-bit PC (AMD64) alternate install CD
Choose this to take full advantage of computers based on the AMD64 or EM64T architecture (e.g., Athlon64, Opteron, EM64T Xeon, Core 2). If you have a non-64-bit processor made by AMD, or if you need full support for 32-bit code, use the Intel x86 images instead.

    "
    [ source: //releases.ubuntu.com/natty/ ]

so all I wanna know is... If I am downloading the 64bit version which has this written "amd64".. would it be able to run on 64bit INTEL processor.. yeah on 64bit INTEL, okay intel... would it run... I really am confused and do not wanna mess anything up later.. so please please help me clarify my doubt that : If I download the 64bit desktop Ubuntu 11.04 edition filename :ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso would I be able to install it on my INTEL i7 { INTEL ARCHITECTURE] laptop 9 64bit processor , offcourse ??????

Please answer my doubt.. pls pls plsss..

and Thanks for ur time reading my questions.. THANK YOU..

You'll be fine with the amd64 version. You'll notice in your quote:

    Those are Intel, as well.

I do not know. Actually , am freaked out, cause the filename has word "amd64" and the description say AMD64 or EMT64... Atleast they could have wrote a filename like.. 64bit.iso or something, what does that amd64.iso mean.. that's y , am worried, I just do not wanna mess things up in the middle of the installation and then corrupt everything, u know the HELL when u mess up with the OS, right.... that's y....

r u sure it will work of EMT64 architecture, it does have that written on the specification, but then y "amd64.iso" ... u sure? ?????

Please do not mind, am really worried.. !!!

amd64 is the correct name for all 64bit CPUs, a "regular" user has access to or needs for a workstation.
x86-64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The intel variant is ia-64 or itanium, but that wasn´t used in anything but server hardware to my knowlege.
Also, support for it is diminishing.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IA-64#Architecture

Btw: just calling a iso 64bit is much too wide.
There are other 64bit processor architectures, not just x86..

So -as jayd512 said- go with the amd64 iso.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.

Okay thanks... but the WIKI site says
" The AMD64 instruction set is implemented in AMD's Athlon 64, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64 X2, Athlon II, Athlon X2, Opteron, Phenom, Phenom II, Turion 64, Turion 64 X2, and later Sempron processors. "...

AMD processor doesn't write AMD64 .. anyway it write x86-64.. I understand.. and Intel writes EMT64, right.. and both there way of implementations are different too.. so all am asking is.. its fine to go with the amd64.iso.. I mean the 64bit (.iso) file right.. no problem, right ?...

just wanted to know.. not fighting or arguing [ that's not my intention]..
thanks by the way, for replying to my questions.. he he

One way you could check for yourself, without fear of breaking your computer.
Burn the image to a blank CD. Pop it in and boot up.
Ubuntu launches a LiveCD version before even showing you the installer.
And if it ain't compatible, then it ain't loading
