can't get ubuntu 11.04 to work -help!

This freaking ubuntu is giving me such hard time. I have only been successful installing it under VM but no into a machine. I tried installing it directly to a HP Pentium 4 with 2GB of RAM and I get all kind of errors, from freezing up to not getting to the installation menu. Then I decided to test it in another machine, a Toshiba laptop Dual-core w 4GB and here I get something totally different. I wasn’t able to install it by booting of the CD, however I was able to install it from windows, but when I try to boot ubuntu I get like a blank screen (bunch of white lines) I can hear ubuntu running but it is like is not recognizing the laptop screen. Then I decided to use a USB pin drive and try to at least boot from there to see if can get any resolution but same problem of the monitor. By the way on the server where I was able to install under VM, I tried first installing directly of the CD and I couldn’t and the server is dell XEON with 4GB of ram so not sure what the issue is. But I’m very frustrated installing ubuntu, so any new ideas are welcome…

    Hello and Welcome!

Does this CD boot properly on any machine?
Did you check the md5sum on the image before you burned it?

Tried other CDs to make sure it wasn't a bad disc? Checked the md5sum? Tried burning at a lower speed?
