installing windows from ubuntu
hi, i need help to install windows from ubuntu
i have a windows xp vm set with qemu, but it is not nearly performant enough
ive tried making a bootable usb from my windows iso, but everytime i boot from it, it says bootmgr is missing. boot order is correct, cd->usb->hd (and theres nothing in the cd). i made the bootable usb twice, once in fat32 format and once in NFTS (no success in fat32, but NFTS seemed to work until it gave me the error BOOTMGR is missing, press alt+ctrl+del to reboot.). ive google for bootmgr missing, but the only solutions are using software to burn windows to a cd/usb (obviously software that need to be run on windows)
so after that didnt work, i mounted the virtual HD image made by my working windows XP VM (qcow2 format), and copied all the files to my windows xp partition on my physical HD (the partition is already made, and formatted nfts and made bootable)
[i copied everything from the mount image virtual HD to my physical /dev/sda4 partition, which is bootable]
i wasnt expecting this to work to start with, and it didnt (altho i just copied nfts files to another nfts part.)
i then updated grub 2, and it DID find both my windows installations (on /dev/sda4 and on the virtual HD i mounted)
i didnt try to boot from windows from the virtual HD image, but i doubt it would work
now i dont know of any other way i could get this running, because the VM doesnt let me run software i need to efficiently, i thought about booting directly from the virtual HD, by permanently mounting it, but everytime i restart ubuntu, i need to mount it all over again, so that leaves me to think it wouldnt work all that well
if any1 has any suggestions on how to get my windows xp running from the iso, the help would be appreciated
(sorry for making a 2nd topic in like 2 days -.-, but it is completely unrelated to the last topic i made)
EDIT: i just tried copying the virtual HD image using ntfsclone, it didnt work, after makign the virtual hd accessible through nbd0 device, it started copying, but stopped at around 50% giving an error message.Last edited by saume; 10-12-2011 at 01:52 AM.

Really, what a mess

"need help to install windows from ubuntu" is not very helpful.
Start again. Are you trying to install XP as a VM client on a ubuntu machine? You have that already working, but it's not fast enough? And you don't want a hdd dual boot because...?

saume, I don't want to be rude (really) but it seems you have a mswindows problem, ubuntu is fine.
A good XP CD will install on a partition with no major problem. But it seems you don't have one. After installing XP you may/will loose grub, the ubuntu boot loader. But that's an after problem, search for "dual boot XP ubuntu" and I'm sure you'll find an howto for it.
a CD made from an iso of a XP install CD will not work. Unless you burn it as a bootable CD with the microsoft boot files. This is as far as I remember, and there are tools to do this on the web. Bottom line, what you need may be a good XP install CD.
Furthermore, as I remember, a XP install on a usb is not straight forward. Again, there were tools to do it on the web.
Regards
Luis
