Upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10...now I can't get to anything

I don't have my Applications, Places or System options anymore and everything that was on the taskbar at the top is gone. At the top left of the screen are File, Edit, View, Go, Bookmarks and Help. The only way for me to call up a program is to utilize something that accesses it (I was able to open Firefox by going to Help and following the Get Help Online link). I can still browse my folders by clicking on that Bookmarks option. I can't even shut down properly.
I'd post a screenshot but apparently I don't have enough posts for that. How do I fix this?

Ubuntu 11.10 has significantly changed the UI, along with a lot of other stuff. Welcome to the bleeding edge! You are going to need to adapt to a new UI paradigm, or install an "older" UI such as Gnome or KDE.

Unity sucks. At the login screen you can change the desktop you login to back to regular Gnome. You can also set it as default.

I don't have the option of changing it back. How do I go back to an older version?
Last time when I upgraded to 11.04, I had lost my entire GUI and was stuck on the command line. Turns out I had to re-install my video driver. Oh and yes, I did not like the Unity interface. I did change it back to the "classic" look, which was where it was at until now.
I really need to stop upgrading so soon.

Ah! The joys of living on the bleeding edge! Just remember that old adage - if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
