Using Android device as Modem on Ubuntu 10.10

I have a Motorola Fire XT Android (2.3.4) device.

I need to use the device as Modem on my laptop running on ubuntu 10.10.

When i attach the device it shows in lsusb, but does not show up in Network connections. I enabled USB tethering on the android device.

    Please suggest a way out.

Are you sure you have a tethering plan? If you don't I don't think Linux will show it as a modem (essentially it won't turn on in the phone so it doesn't enable Linux to see it as a modem). My Evo does that, I didn't want to pay the extra for a tethering plan so it won't show up as a modem. I know there are ways around it but I am not going to detail those. If you can tether in Windows or Mac (if you dual boot) then post again and I'll try to help diagnose

I'm running Android 2.3.x on my Nexus One (N1) phone which is unlocked and allows tethering. It shows up in the network manager as a modem and connects automatically when I use Ubuntu or Scientific Linux. So, jmadero may be correct if you don't have an unlocked device and you don't have a tethering plan with your provider.
