    Routine Updates Kill Network Connections

I am a newbie who had help setting up a Dell 2950 Server running Lucid 10.04 LTS as a NAS/MediaServer. For the last year it has run like a charm and had no problems. Approximately every 2 weeks I install the recommended updates and until now - no problems. However, Last week when I did this I now find I have NO network connectivity.

During the BIOS Boot I can see the network assigning a DHCP address to the server for use if I was using the network boot option (I don't).

The system boots normally, but when I enter my password to open the server - NO NETWORK CONNECTIONS. The servers have 4 separate GB network cards and to see if I had a bad card, I plugged all cards into a new GB switch. All 4 connections (etho-eth3) show they try to connect but refuse to pick up a DCHP/connection.

A friend recommended I try running with a former Kernal option upon bootup but the system goes right into the "pink" Lucid login screen with no grub options. I am getting used to SAMBA problems but without a connection I cannot even blame SAMBA.

    STEP-BY-STEP Help would be appreciated.

    Roy

FYI - I can verify I have good connectivity at the cable connecting into my server using a windows laptop so I know the network is working as expected.

    Hi,
    Summary:
    1. During bios boot - network-cards get IP Addresses from DHCP
    2. When Ubuntu is started you have no more network connections.

    Here are my question starting:
    - Are there any logs?
    (/var/log)
You can list by last written with: "ls -ltr"
    With "tail -n 50 <file>" the last 50 entry's will be listed.
    - Is there anything suspicious here: "dmesg"
    - What's your network-card configuration???
Should the Server get only one IP and use all 4 cards simultaneously or shall he get one IP per card?
    - Your network-cards have no IP assigned, or they aren't even shown?
just post the print of "ifconfig"
It will list all network interfaces with assigned addresses.
    - Does it work when you restart a infterface ...
    like:
    ifconfig eth0 down
    ifconfig eth0 up
    - Does it work when you assign a IP manual ...
    like:
    ifconfig eth0 down
    ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2/24 up
checked the syntax ... was wrong ...

Have you had any changes with the firewall (iptables).

    Greetings, Zomby

There are no logs that I can find. I have tried both singular as well as multiple ETH connections with no differences. The system refuses to obtain an IP address. I have tried a manual IP address with the same negative results. From what I am reading it looks like it might be a kernel issue, but I am WAY to much of a newbie to troubleshoot the kernel. I cannot tell you what was actually changed with the routine updates. The network has always "just worked" until the recent "install all available updates"

Watching the post screens as the server boots up, the Bios seems to grab a good IP address (so if I was using a network based OS install it would work) but when things are handed over from HW to Ubuntu, the network manager shows everything enabled, but nothing with IP addresses connected - hence no network.

    Ideas??

I thought I'd try a Live CD/DVD and since I had a Mint disk laying around I tried it. I still have no Network connection, but I did find a DMSEG Log. See Attached. I apologize for the length of this thing, but I didn't know what was important. Hope this helps.
