Ubuntu + Geforce 9800GT max resolution of 640x480

To start I've been having issues with my 9800 gt on both ubuntu 11.10 and backtrack 5 kernel version 2.6.39.4.

I have my computer set up to an LG HD tv at the moment until I get a replacement monitor and the max resoultion I'm able to get is 640x480 while the tv has a native resolution of 1600x1200. I've tried everything I can think of and can find online to get it to display 1600x1200 including xrandr (cvt --addmode --output --newmode etc..) and modifying my xorg.conf file. I am new to having to mess with the xorg.conf file and I removed all changes I made to post my clean conf file here. I'm using a dvi adaptder to a vga cable into the tv. Windows displays the resolution with no problems but I believe the issue is because the tv doesn't give an edid. Below are copies of my xorg.conf file and xorg.0.log file.

If the nvidia-bug-report is needed I will post that as well.

Try to add Resolution ( Modes ) manually in xorg.conf file.

Hello and thank you for the reply. I'm not entirely sure where to find that information however in windows I have to be at 1600x1200 with 50 Hz refresh rate for the optimum display. Anything above 50Hz gives me a unsupported format error. As far setting the modes when I tried to create the mode using xrandr it appeared but if I tried to use it it didn't do anything except revert back to 640x480. It seemed like it didn't even try to change the output.

I'll give the modifications you made to xorg.conf a try and post back my results. Thank you for the information, every other distro I've used I never had to modify the xorg.conf file but I was also using a regular monitor at the time.

Latest version of X Server uses default settings and configure Display properly in most of machines. Most of new distros don't even have xorg.conf file or an empty xorg.conf. We have to use custom xorg.conf file in a very few machines.
