    Hello and welcome!

Take a look at Unetbootin for installing Linux on your memory stick:

    UNetbootin - Homepage and Downloads

It's worked perfectly for me every time that I've tried it.

What Ozar said. Also, with Ubuntu, you can have Unetbootin reserve writable space on the memory stick so it becomes more than just a liveUSB device.

Or do a full install to the USB drive, not a liveUSB. IMO, that works better.

What did you try and what happened? What didn't work? Unetbootin is designed specifically for this purpose. If you gave more information on what you tried and where it failed, you might get some help.

i go to source forge, i don't know where to download netboot installer. i download it on stick, then download ubantu 10.04 to the stick, it is interrupted halfway. if i download to hard drive, i'm asked to open iso file, don't know where.
    thanks for your help.
why i need linux on my laptop, is ii am in my 70s, and have to go to city a whole month for cancer treatment. i'll be using wireless connections and windows is to dangerous for infection.

Here is the Ubuntu download page. The item #2 on the page is a how-to to install to a CD or USB drive. Item #1 allows you to choose the version you want, which would be 10.04LTS (Long Term Support). You have to decide on 32-bit or 64-bit. That will download the appropriate ISO. Once you install the OS on the thumb drive, we can help you copy the appropriate files from your hard drive to the USB thumb drive.

You can also change the bios on your computer so itll automatically boot from the USB stick whenever its plugged in. I had it this way on my laptop so when the usb is unplugged, it'll boot windows vista, but when I plug it in, it boots Linux.
