Need help getting Audio working in Ubuntu 11.10

I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on an old Compaq EN a few days ago with an ES-1869 sound card. In prior versions of Ubuntu on a similar machine I followed the instructions in the following link to get my audio to work. The link is as follows:

help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToSetupSoundCards (this is a URL that I'm not supposed submit for a while but must so you can understand what I've already done.

Unfortunately, this time I can see the driver under the hardware tab of the sound applet however I still have no sound. Does anyone know how to fix this in V 11.10.

Note, when it comes to linux I'm a rel newb so if there are any instructions, please be explicit as I probably don't undstand what I'm doing. Thanks.

Do u have multiple sound cards? Like an onboard and an add in card? U can go into sound properties and make sure your output is set to the correct driver. Just right click on the sound applet in the top right hand corner and select sound properties. Then go to output and make sure its set correctly. Post back with results.

Thanks for the reply. When I first installed Ubuntu on this old Deskpro, it only had the built in card. Dispite everthing I tried I could never get the ES1869 to make sound. As it turned out a friend was junking an old system and gave me a SoundBlaster Live card which I installed and at the same time, disabled the onboard card. As soon as the SoundBlaster card was installed, I had sound. So although I never solved the issue I solved my problem.
