SOLVED - Playing DVDS
Hello All
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and have installed all updates.
I can not play dvds with Movie Player and would like to know what package I have to install to watch dvds. If I can't get it from the repository and have to install it from some place else I will need easy instructions on how to do it. I have tried every package in the repository that said it would play dvds with no luck. The only one that came close to me being able to play a dvd was SMplayer and it said that I needed to update it but could not see how to update it so I couldn't use it either.
I'm a newbie so like I said I will need easy instructions or I should say simple instructions.
Also when I tried to use Movie Player it accessed the internet and said there were no packages for it.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello All
Thank you for such a fast reply.
I went to the following links
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats
I then updated every thing with the following command
sudo apt-get update
Next I clicked on this link
Click here to install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package
and got the following in a window
Launch Application
This link needs to be opened with an application.
Send to:
apturl
Choose an Application then there is a button that says chooose
Remember my choice for apt inks.
Then there are two more buttons with the following cancel and ok
I don't know what to do with the above things. Please help me with this as I am a real newbie with Ubuntu.
Thank you for your help with this.
Have a Happy Holiday.

- 12-24-2011 #5This allowed VLC to play everything for me in Ubuntu, but I'm not entirely sure if it will work for MPlayer.Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Hello jayd512
Where do I get VLC and how do I install it? I will try the commands that you gave me after I have installed VLC this way I'll have a better chance of getting it to work. Is Mplayer installed automatically when you install Ubuntu?
Thank you for your help inadvance.
Have Happy Holidays.

You get all your software from the same place. The package manager GUI or use the command line. The choice is yours but the end result is the same. If VLC is not installed already, check the package manager (Synaptic) or use the command line.
same for mplayer.Code:sudo apt-get install vlc
Code:sudo apt-get install mplayer

I would like to mark this as solved but can't figure out how to do that. If someone could tell me, I have tried the different things on the right but didn't find anything to do it.
Thank you.
