computer won't come out of standby.
Hi all. I'm trying to get standby working on a IBM R40e but when i put it on standby it seems to go onto standby fine but when i try to turn it on from standby all i get is a black screen and the mouse cursor. If i put the cursor in the middle of the screen it changes to the text box cursor thing. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how to fix it so standby works?

What distribution+version+kernel are you running?

Sorry forgot about that stuff.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 and the kernel version is 3.0.0-14.

There have been some issues with current kernels having problems with standby recovery. If you need to maintain your system state (open applications, windows, etc), then you might try hibernating instead, otherwise just shut the system down.

Ok. The thing is hibernate does the same thing. I turn it back on from being hibernated and all i get is a black screen and the mouse cursor. Is this the same problem as the standby problem or is it caused by something else?

Hmmm. I think something else is going on. Please provide some hardware information, such as make, model, video hardware, etc. Mostly the problems I mentioned are related to WiFi, not the video system.

Here are the specs:
IBM R40e 2684 L9G
2.4GHz Intel celeron processor
624MB RAM
ATI radeon 330M 16MB integrated
30GB hard drive
DVD rom drive
I do have a USB WiFi dongle plugged in. It's a D-Link DWA-140. If you need any more detailed info just ask.

Just a SWAG (Stupid WildAss Guess), but what happens if you leave the WiFi dongle disconnected when you put the system into standby or hibernate? This is a fairly old system, but that should not be an issue, though the latest Ubuntu may not play nice with such dated hardware.

I might be way off base here... Could the RAM amount be the issue?
The newer versions of Ubuntu recommend a gig of memory.
Having 624 MB might be choking it out a little bit.Jay
