Blu-Ray Drive recognized as DVD writer by OS
I'm running Kubuntu 11.04 with kernel version 2.6.38-13-generic on an x86_64 machine that includes an LG Blu-Ray burner and a DVD-rom. When I installed 11.04, it apparently identified the burner as a DVD writer instead of a blu-ray burner and, of course I can't do anything with blu-ray discs as a result.
Unfortunately, the Kubuntu forums have been uncharactistically unhelpful in this case so I thought I try here. Can anyone tell me how I might get the OS to understand that the device is actually a Blu-Ray burner? I've looked in /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab and neither of them seem to have anything that refer to the DVD drives. If someone could point me to some info that would help me understand how Linux and more importantly Kubuntu handles these drives and detecting what they are, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Linux support for BD devices is very limited as yet. By default, until you install the blu-ray libraries and such, it will only be seen as a DVD burner (which it is). Try installing the libbluray package. That may allow tools such as Brasero or K3b to read/burn blu-ray discs, although it won't let you run commercial blu-ray discs.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Thanks for the info. I tried installing the libraries, but it didn't help. I did search the K3B forum a bit and found several posts about folks at least being able to write to a BD-R disk, even if it failed to complete the job. I can't seem to even get that far. Most puzzling...
