As rcgreen said; however, DO NOT try to compare the boot processes of Linux/Unix and Windows. They are VERY different, in form as well as function. There are documents and wikis on the web that will explain the Linux boot process for you in excruciating detail...
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
