Hi I need help. I am trying to access my files on my old internal hdd using the Vodafone netbook. The error that comes up is that I don't have the right to access but gives no option to enter the password. I have irreplaceable info on it and I don't want to lose the info. If someone could please explain the steps as simply as possible. The old hdd is of my old Ubuntu 11 system and the netbook is also running Ubuntu 11.

How are you trying to access them: as yourself or as root? If you are trying as yourself, it could be due to you having a different UID on this system. It's the UID (user ID number) that Linux knows you by, not your login name. If you just get the message "Permission denied" with no password prompt, then this could be the cause.

    Have you tried using sudo?

If you press Alt + F2 and enter "gksu nautilus" (without the quotes) it will ask for your password and open a root file manager. You can use that to copy the files to where you want them and sort out the permissions.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
