    update it seems to work if i use eject on the window/panel rarther than the eject on the front of the drive ????!!!!????

    My experience has been that the drive tray won't even
    open when you push the button with the disk mounted.
    This is to prevent you from removing/changing mounted
    media. So, the correct thing to do is to let the software
    unmount and eject the disk for you.

    Lack of unmounting would explain why the contents of that directory don't change. The kernel still thinks the old cd is in there.
