    Help with network cardsĄ!!!!!!!!

OK first I have not been able to make any progress in the Ubuntu forums so I'm looking in a broader spectrum.
    I have a Toshiba satellite c655d-s5130, win7ultimate duel boot with Ubuntu 10.04.3
network cards all work with window but can't get them to work with Linux. I have tried opensuse, fedora, mint, and Ubuntu and Ubuntu 10.04 is the only one that will even load on my machine without glitches. save for the network card issue.

I have the right driver and I'm certain of that.
lshw -c network shows both cards as network UNCLAIMED.
An install attempt with opens use 12.1 showed both cards as disconnected from the link.
this is the best I can do until I get off work in about 6 hrs any help is greatly appreciated

I suspect the problem is Windows -vs-Linux., wherein Windows will increasingly find ways to prevent you from using Linux. There is probably a switch to turn-on only when running Windows. They more advanced Windows get - I suspect, the harder you will find it to install Linux. This is why they were sucessfully sued in Europe years ago (monopoly).

My system is not new. However, I did find slight inconsistencies from time to time regarding my direct network connection. There is a Linux switch in "network-config". I am Debian. Even when my direct connect was working, I found the switch to be deselected upon initial installation. I selected eth0, and did a test, everything has been fine ever since.

For this and other reasons, I am no longer dual-boot, Linux/Debian drives everything. Something I also think you can no longer do if the box ships with Windows on it. Soon we will see an increase of demand for systems to ship without a OS. I believe they actually cost more. And then the manufacturers also have gimmicks.

Try network-config. It will be difficult to find after installation. Look in other, on the menu which lists all installed software - you will find it somewhere, even if not in alphabetical order.

I am afraid that network-config output is like Latin to me(I am not advanced). Using the GUI you can establish your network; IE: DNS servers, wlan, eth0 - and run a test. The output from the GUI network-config test should be in a language we can both understand.

You should probably also do "man network-config".

ok do this; "network-config -tl" (tl = TL-this is info only not part of command) will start a configuration for you. I did not complete it but it began with the same options as the GUI.

    network-config -tl
