SSH VNC Connection Shuts Down When Opening Programs...

I've created a SSH tunnel for VNC from my work Ubuntu 10.04 Virtual Machine to my home desktop which is also Ubuntu 10.04. I use Ubuntu's Remote Desktop Viewer to connect. I can log in and view the remote desktop.
On the remote desktop: I can open a some programs with no problem, but any time I open Firefox it shuts down the connection. I can open Chrome, but go to a site or two and it shuts down the connection. This also happens with a few other programs.

For the tunnel to work again, I must remove the below files on the remote machine in order to restart vncserver on :1
    Code:
    rm /tmp/.X1-lock
    rm /tmp/.X11-unix/X1
I've also tried connecting via xtightvncviewer, and experience the same problem.

If someone knows what my problem is or could point me in the right direction... many thanks.
    James
