    Hello, welcome to the forums.

Preceding a file or folder name with a period tells Linux you want those files or folders to be invisible, or hidden.
You can choose show hidden files from the options menu in your file browser and these files/folders will display.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello and Welcome!

Two ways to see if that file exists.
First, open a terminal and do:
    Code:
    ls -al
This should list all files and folders, including hidden ones. It will also show the current permissions for them.

Second, you can view them in a file manager such as as Nautilus or Konqueror. When you open up to your /home folder, hit Ctrl + h to show hidden items. From there you should be able to right-click on an item and check permissions, as well.
