Unhappy I logged out of my linux and i can not get back in!

I accidentally logged out of my Linux computer and it does not let me log back in. Every time i restart my computer it brings me to a page where it shows a white box with my computers name, the time, and a button to shut down my computer. There is no way to interact with the computer that i can see. I desperately need to get back access to my account and i am completely stuck. Help!!

    Than you for your time.

    Hello and Welcome!

Were their any system updates before this happened?
Are you able to login via a console (Ctrl + Alt + F1-6)?

If so, can you use startx?

that you for telling me about ctrl + alt. it brings me to a command line and i can login via that. How can i get back to my desktop background from there? Yes the system was updating before the issue happened.

After logging in on a command line, try the command startx.

when I run startx, it gives me this error message.
    fatal server error
server is already active for display 0.
if this server is no longer running remove tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

I can find the tmp folder but not the file it asked for.
