    Problem with Intel wm3945abg compatibility


    Hello,
    My laptop uses Intel WM3945ABG wireless board. I have found out that my kernel is to new for normal use. Now I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-27. in page intellinuxwireless.org the minimum kernel is 2.6.24. The thing is that it says that I should use intree driver directly. I don't know how to do it. My wi-fi works, but after a while speed decreases to 1Mbps (~120KB/S) and that's it. althoug on windows (I have dual boot) everything is normal. So, I guess, I need normal drivers for my wireless board.

    I tried to get the driver so I could play with it but the intellinuxwireless.org website is down right now. According to Intel the driver is two years old. I'm guessing this driver is already in 12.04. Open Terminal (CTRL-ALT-T) and type in:

    Code:
    lspci -k | grep -i 'Intel'
    or

    Code:
    lspci -k | grep -i 'Intel WM3945ABG'
    See what that gets you. If it lists the Intel WM3945ABG wireless board with the intree driver, you've already got it.

    First command gives

    And second gives nothing. So is the driver installed? I suppose, yes. But then why my wireless works worse than with windows. Oh yeah, I remembered, that in the older ubuntu release (9.04) everything was fine, too. Releases until 10.10 were giving less trouble. I suppose the kernel is causing this. It irks, then I get away from modem about 2 meters and speed goes down like this.

    Sorry, maybe making the command verbose will help us identify the driver. Try this in Terminal:

    Code:
    lspci -k | grep -i -v 'Intel'
    I just want to make sure you have the intree driver and not something else.

    Yes, that is the right driver, but the firmware on the PCI card may be old. Check in the software center to see if "linux-firmware-nonfree" is installed. If it is not, go ahead and install it and see if that improves things.

    Found another person who solved this problem:

    "Open /etc/modprobe.d/iwl3945.conf file and set iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=0"

    There wasn't such a file, then by command i have just created it and now it looks like this

    And buy the way, the linux-firmware-nonfree has not been installed, I installed it, but nothing seems to change.
