    First thing is to check if you have X at all. What happens when you type startx?

    Did you install the server edition by accident? Normally Ubuntu boots into a GUI session by default... I'd try Hazel's suggestion too.

    If its not obvious I am new to Linux. I did install the server version. I also want to install owncloud at some point. I ran apt-get install xinit, then startx. Now whats next? Would it be better for me to install the desktop version? If these questions are inappropriate for here please dirrect me someplace else.

    For a server and owncloud you do not need a graphical environment.
    In fact, imho it only takes resources and has no purpose on a webapp server.
