    Question [Backtrack-5R2] Problem regarding internet connection...


    Hi everyone, I'm having a problem regarding internet in my backtrack-5 distribution. When I connect the LAN cable it shows connected. But I'm unable to browse internet.

    I issued
    Code:
    ifconfig
    which shows correctly my ip and all other things. I also tried to renew ip, and dhcp request 2 to 3 times it shows everything working fine.

    Previously when I installed it, internet worked fine for me. Now, again i installed backtrack on same machine but this time I'm unable to browse.
    I tried to reinstall the whole distribution but no help.

    Help me regarding the issue.

    My configruation is:
    HP Pavallion g6
    Intel core i5 (x64) machine. 4GB RAM
    Backtrack 5R2 x64
    Realtek PCIe FE Family Ethernet controller.

    do you have a default gateway set? It should be the ip address of your router probably. check w/:

    you can see my default gw is 192.168.1.1

    also check your DNS settings:

    if you are using DHCP, these settings should be assigned to you. if they are not, you can get them on the webpage of your router (if you have one).

    yeah, in my case it doesn't seems I have a default gateway. Probably it should be 192.168.25.1
    One more thing, my backtrack installation is alongwith windows 7. In win7 internet works fine.

    if you wanted to mimic your windows ip settings, you'd use a default gw of 192.168.24.1 and DNS of 4.2.2.2. you can try the route with this:

    sudo route add default gw 192.168.24.1
    i'm not sure if you need the sudo part or not - Ubuntu usually does.

    if you *know* it should be 192.168.25.1, then by all means, try that instead, though.

    for the DNS, just put "nameserver 4.2.2.2" above the others it /etc/resolv.conf. If the others are bad, you can just comment the lines out.

    to make the default gw permanent, add it to /etc/network/interfaces (again, for Ubuntu/Debian derivatives). See this thread for details on syntax, etc.:

    Okay, problem resolved, now internet works fine.

    Firstly, I tried to copy settings as of windows and it gave me some error.

    route add default gw 192.168.24.1

    Then, I tried to use static IP's still it didn't work out.
    i.e.
    IP 192.168.24.27
    mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.24.1

    Finally, I added default gateway to 192.168.25.1

    route add default gw 192.168.25.1

    and added the DNS nameserver to 4.2.2.2

    I'm still wondering why backtrack is not obtaining the addresses automatically (because in previous installation I didn't had to modify the settings).


    Finally it worked, thanx everyone for help.
