    Ubuntu 10.04 boots to terminal

For some reason my Ubuntu boots to terminal. By selecting the older Kernel I managed to get the graphical window visible.
What should I do? Does it help if I upgrade the Ubuntu to 12.04?

I'm currently using 2.6.32-40 which is the latest working Kernel.
2.6.32-41 and 2.6.32-42 do not work since they boot to terminal.
